Finnish labor union opposition to budget plans

The Finnish Confederation of Trade Unions (SAK) has criticized the government’s budget proposals for failing to adequately address rising unemployment and national debt.

Initially, SAK chief economist Patrizio Lainà warned that the Ministry of Finance’s plan neglected a growing unemployment crisis, noting that long-term unemployment had reached levels seen during the 1990s recession. Lainà advocated for restoring social security protections, increasing wage subsidies, and reversing corporate tax cuts to prevent an additional €2 billion in debt.

As the Orpo government entered final budget negotiations, SAK Chairman Jarkko Eloranta reinforced these calls for urgent action. Eloranta highlighted that despite emerging signs of economic growth, tax decisions and VAT increases have diminished workers' purchasing power. He pointed to the significant number of unemployed individuals—including 150,000 long-term unemployed and 50,000 under age 25—urging the government to implement active employment policies rather than deferring the issue to future administrations.
