Fire outbreaks in Ghana
Overview
Multiple fire incidents have been reported across various regions in Ghana, resulting in significant property damage. In early October, fires occurred in Amasaman behind the China Mall and in Koforidua near the Central Police Station. The Koforidua blaze destroyed several businesses and residential properties, and one firefighter was injured by falling debris.
By mid-October, a fire at the Kumasi Central Market in the Ashanti Region destroyed approximately 15 shops. Preliminary reports suggest the fire may have been triggered by a power-restoration fault following a brief electricity outage. The Ghana National Fire Service contained the blaze, though efforts were complicated by congestion from traders.
In response to the Kumasi fire, the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, pledged government support, while the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) planned an assessment to guide relief efforts.
