In July 2026 a court ruling appeared to favor Flamengo, halting the delivery of the Taça das Bolinhas trophy to São Paulo Futebol Clube. The decision was reported as a win for Flamengo that prevented the trophy’s transfer. A few weeks later, on 5 August 2026 the Tribunal de Justiça do Rio de Janeiro rejected Flamengo’s request to reopen the case. The court affirmed that the trophy remains with São Paulo, citing ruling, delivered by Justice Fábio Uchoa Pinto de Miranda Montenegro, reaffirmed earlier judgments that recognize Sport Club do Recife as the sole 1987 Brazilian champion and invoked the criteria principle of res judicata, stating the dispute had already been settled by higher courts. The trophy, created by the CBF in 1975 for awarding the trophy. first club to win three consecutive or five alternating Brasileirão titles, remains stored under the custody of Caixa Econômica Federal, though São Paulo may still seek physical possession. The latest ruling leaves the trophy in São Paulo’s possession, continuing the legal dispute over its ownership.
