Fleetwood Town began their Sky Bet League Two campaign with strong momentum under manager Matt Lawlor. The club remained unbeaten in their opening matches, which included a historic Carabao Cup run featuring a 4–0 victory over Shrewsbury Town and a 1–0 win against Championship side Sheffield United, securing a fourth-round tie against Arsenal. In late August, Fleetwood maintained an unbeaten record through four competitive fixtures, including a league draw with Gillingham and a win against Chesterfield. However, following a period of difficulty in early October that included a league defeat to Salford City, the club began to find form again with a 4–1 midweek cup victory against Barnsley. After a draw with Walsall on October 10, Fleetwood secured a victory over Rotherham United. Ahead of an away match against eighth-place Cheltenham Town, Lawlor emphasized the need for players to increase their self-belief and maintain composure, noting that the coaching staff maintains high confidence in the squad’s potential. Following the match against Cheltenham, Fleetwood faced a 4–2 defeat. Despite the loss, captain Ched Evans scored two goals, demonstrating offensive potential. The team subsequently prepared to face Exeter City, looking to improve defensive resolve against an opponent that had conceded only six goals in its opening 12 league games.
