Researchers from Flinders University published a ten-year study in the journal ‘Nutrients’ regarding the relationship between beverage consumption and bone mineral density (BMD) in postmenopausal women. Analyzing data from 9,704 women aged 65 and older, the study found that consuming more than five cups of coffee per day was associated with reduced BMD in the hip and femoral neck. Moderate consumption of two to three cups per day showed no negative impact on bone health. The association between high coffee intake and lower BMD was more significant among women with higher alcohol intake. Conversely, regular tea consumption was associated with higher total hip bone density, potentially due to catechins which may promote bone formation and slow bone loss. Researchers noted that while caffeine may influence calcium metabolism, the study identifies correlations rather than proving causation. Scientists noted that while the observed differences in bone density are relatively small, they may have ‘significant implications for fracture prevention in large populations.’
