Heavy rainfall and water releases from barrages in Nepal have caused significant flooding in India’s Bihar and Uttar Pradesh regions. In Bihar’s West Champaran district, the release of approximately 180,000 cusecs of water from the Valmiki Nagar Gandak Barrage has inundated villages such as Chakdahwa, Bintoli, and Jhautala, with roads submerged under nearly five feet of water. Residents have reported being forced to wade through waist-deep water for up to three kilometers to reach essential services, while broken roads and lack of electricity exacerbate the impact. Additionally, the Saryu River is rising rapidly following the release of about 388,000 cusecs of water from three Nepalese barrages, increasing flood risks in the Doihighat area of Mau district. The crisis has been compounded by a massive glacier collapse in the Himalayas, which triggered devastating flash floods across Nepal and Tibet. The death toll in Nepal has risen to at least 1,007 confirmed victims, with nearly 4,600 people missing in Nepal and approximately 550 missing in Tibet. Health authorities have issued urgent advisories regarding food safety. In Nepal, officials warned against consuming fish or food items swept away by currents, noting that the Bhote Koshi River is heavily contaminated with sewage, chemicals, and biological waste. Similarly, the Bihar government advised residents in West Champaran and Gopalganj not to catch, buy, or eat unusual fish, such as Bagarius bagarius, found in the Gandak River, due to potential pathogen exposure. These warnings follow reports of over 900 recovered bodies in Nepal. In Bihar, the Animal and Fisheries Resources Department (AFRD) has emphasized that these foreign fish were washed into the state from various ponds, rivers, and reservoirs, posing risks of diseases like cholera, dysentery, typhoid, and hepatitis. Local residents have already reported symptoms of illness after consuming these fish.
