Flooding in Ecuador provinces

Heavy rainfall has triggered significant flooding across multiple provinces in Ecuador.

In the Esmeraldas province, the overflow of the Pambil, Onzole, and Cayapas rivers caused flooding in the Eloy Alfaro canton. Residents in communities such as Capulí, Santo Domingo de Ónzole, Telembí, and Santa María 2 faced rising waters that necessitated the use of boats for navigation. The weather conditions also resulted in power outages and a landslide in the Alto Cayapa area.

In the Guayas province, the Balao canton experienced intense rainfall, recording 207 millimeters over a 48-hour period. Local authorities have responded by deploying machinery to clean canals in sectors including San Carlos, 28 de Mayo, Las Madres, and Cien Familias. Humanitarian aid, such as food kits, has begun distribution to affected families. To mitigate further risks, high-capacity pumps have been deployed to Milagro, Salitre, and Juján, while the provincial government maintains surveillance in several other locations. Authorities have noted that over 223,000 residents remain at risk due to the El Niño phenomenon.
