Heavy rainfall and flooding in Sakarya, Turkey, caused significant disruption across several districts. In the Karasu district, specifically the Darıçayırı neighborhood, overflowing waters from a dam area submerged central locations with water levels exceeding 1 meter, damaging homes, businesses, and agricultural lands. Emergency operations led by AFAD and the Coast Guard resulted in the evacuation of four people, while landslides on the D-100 highway in Serdivan affected traffic. The weather also forced the closure of 18 schools across the Akyazı, Erenler, Karapürçek, and Karasu districts. As recovery efforts progressed, officials noted that the Geyve district experienced its heaviest rainfall in 27 years, recording 155 kilograms of precipitation per square meter. Sakarya Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Yusuf Alemdar visited neighborhoods including Dereköy, Koru, and Setçe to oversee damage assessments. Local water authority SASKİ deployed 560 personnel and 255 vehicles to manage the aftermath, focusing on stream bed damage and providing food and shelter to affected citizens. While the flooding caused infrastructure damage and the closure of several bridges, the intense precipitation has also replenished local water resources. SASKİ reported that Sapanca Lake’s water level rose by 30 centimeters, gaining approximately 15 million cubic meters of water. This increase is considered sufficient to meet the city’s drinking water needs for roughly three months.
