Flooding in St. Vincent and the Grenadines

Overview

Heavy rainfall triggered by a tropical wave caused flooding across several communities in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. The National Emergency Management Organisation (NEMO) reported that 130 millimetres of rain displaced 29 people, with some individuals seeking refuge in public shelters or with relatives. While no deaths or injuries were reported, rescue operations were conducted in the Buccament area.

Following the event, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Security St. Clair Leacock stated that officials are still assessing the full extent of damage to homes and infrastructure. While the government’s emergency response and inter-agency coordination were described as effective, Leacock called for a shift in national ‘disaster culture.’ He emphasized the need for proactive management, including the enforcement of building codes and addressing vulnerabilities such as squatting along riverbanks to mitigate future impacts.
