German cyclist Florian Lipowitz began his return to competitive racing in Italy following a seven-week hiatus caused by a broken collarbone sustained during the Tour de France. On September 9, Lipowitz completed his first major comeback at the Giro della Toscana, performing lead-out work to assist teammate Giulio Pellizzari in securing a victory. He participated in a series of Italian races to test his fitness and assess his body’s reaction to racing loads. Lipowitz has now been cleared to compete in the Road World Championships in Montreal. He used the upcoming championship as motivation during his rehabilitation process to avoid an early end to his season. While Lipowitz acknowledged he may lack the “explosiveness required for a top result,” he noted that the championship is a unique event where “anything can happen.” He also observed that the race landscape has shifted due to the absence of defending champion Tadej Pogacar, who was forced to end his season following a crash, leaving the field more open for competition. Following the World Championships in Montreal, Lipowitz finished in 47th place, describing the event as one of the hardest races of his career. He attributed his lack of explosive power to the collarbone fracture sustained two months prior. Looking forward, Lipowitz plans to compete in three Italian one-day races: Giro dell'Emilia, Tre Valli Varesine, and Il Lombardia. He is also targeting the upcoming World Championships in the French Alps, which is expected to feature the most difficult course in 47 years due to 5,700 meters of elevation gain, potentially offering him a significant medal opportunity.
