Florida detention center guard assault charges
Overview
Two former security guards, Stephen Trejos and Andre Seenaraine, have been charged with first-degree misdemeanor battery following an alleged assault on Rigoberto Rodríguez Arce, a 42-year-old Cuban migrant. The incident reportedly took place on January 25 at the former ‘Alligator Alcatraz’ detention center in Florida.
Witnesses stated the altercation began when detainees protested a lack of food and water by striking metal benches. One witness, Frank Rivera, testified that Trejos threw Rodríguez to the ground and struck him, while Seenaraine allegedly punched him in the face. Rodríguez’s attorney noted the detainee arrived at a subsequent facility in Texas with a bruised eye, a bandaged hand, and a bloodstained uniform.
Both defendants have pleaded not guilty. Defense attorneys for Trejos have filed a petition to dismiss the case, arguing that security footage shows the guard used “standard control maneuvers” after Rodríguez allegedly spat at him.
