Florida Polytechnic University has acquired the Astro, a Jetson ONE electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, marking the first time a police department in the United States has incorporated this technology. The single-seat vehicle, costing nearly $150,000, features eight electric motors and can reach speeds of 102 km/h with a flight time of approximately 20 minutes. The university intends to use the aircraft for campus patrols, emergency supply delivery, accessing difficult terrain, assisting in missing person searches, and post-hurricane recovery efforts. Additionally, the project serves an educational role, providing real-world data for the university’s aerospace engineering and computer science programs. The aircraft is equipped with a ballistic parachute and an automatic landing function. Final operational deployment is pending approval from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
