Flutter Entertainment, the parent company of Paddy Power, Sky Bet, and Betfair, has announced a major restructuring plan across its UK and Ireland division. The company expects to cut up to 1,400 jobs, representing approximately 15.6% of its 9,000-strong workforce in those regions. The restructuring is expected to cost between $80 million and $90 million. The restructuring is a direct response to significant tax increases in the United Kingdom. These include a remote gaming duty that rose from 21% to 40% in April 2026 and an upcoming increase in general betting duty for online bets from 15% to 25% scheduled for April 2027. CEO Kevin Harrington stated that the company cannot fully absorb these increases without reducing its fixed cost base, noting that the changes have “fundamentally altered the economic model of the regulated industry.” Impacted locations include Leeds and Dublin, as well as international hubs in Porto, Portugal, and Cluj-Napoca, Romania. In Cluj-Napoca, Betfair Romania Development confirmed that approximately 300 employees from the UK and Ireland teams will be laid off as part of the effort to simplify organizational structures and consolidate the Flutter UKI strategy. Representatives emphasized that these layoffs do not reflect individual or team performance, noting that the Cluj-Napoca center remains a strategic location for the group. The Betting and Gaming Council has expressed concern regarding these workforce reductions, suggesting they reflect the growing fiscal pressure currently facing the regulated gambling industry.
