Focused ultrasound research and clinical applications
Overview
Research into focused ultrasound (FUS) has expanded across material science and biomedical engineering. In manufacturing, FUS is being used as a non-invasive mechanism to actuate soft matter, such as 4D-printed shape memory polymers and liquid crystal elastomers, without embedded electronics.
In medical applications, studies in the US indicate that FUS combined with intravenous microbubbles can modulate the blood-brain barrier to stimulate oligodendrogenesis, potentially enhancing white matter integrity. Meanwhile, researchers in China are conducting early clinical trials using FUS to stimulate deep brain structures like the thalamus. A preliminary study involving patients with chronic consciousness disorders reported behavioral improvements in 13 out of 24 participants, including one patient who regained basic functions after a three-month coma.
