Escalating malnutrition crisis in Somalia amid aid cuts

Overview

The food insecurity crisis in Somalia has intensified as humanitarian funding for malnutrition programs has dropped by over 80%. Total available donor funding is estimated at $300 million, a sharp decline from the $2.2 billion mobilized during the 2022 emergency. Notably, United States support fell from $70 million in the previous year to zero this year.

In Baidoa displacement sites, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) reported that approximately 50% of screened children are acutely malnourished, with one in four suffering from severe acute malnutrition. A July survey indicated that one-third of families are surviving on only one meal per day. UNICEF has warned that approximately 1.2 million children are expected to suffer from malnutrition this year, including 500,000 facing severe acute malnutrition.

These funding reductions have forced the closure of 205 health and nutrition facilities. Consequently, there has been a 32% increase in children admitted to stabilization centers for severe acute malnutrition during the first half of the year compared to the previous year.

The situation is compounded by environmental threats, including consecutive failed rainy seasons, prolonged drought, and the potential for heavy flooding driven by El Niño. Economic pressures, such as rising fuel and fertilizer costs linked to Middle East conflicts, are further straining the delivery of essential services like water, education, and protection.
