Following mid-September incidents in Quang Tri and earlier suspected bread-related poisonings in Quang Ngai, a major mass food poisoning event centered on the ‘Bà Được’ street food stall in Cam Thanh Ward has escalated. By October 10, hospitalizations reached approximately 135 people after consuming bread from the vendor. Patients reported symptoms such as abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and fever. Local health authorities and the Ministry of Health's Food Safety Department issued urgent directives to trace the origin of ingredients, including sauces and vegetables, which the owner reported were prepared at a private residence. As of October 13, the number of suspected cases rose to 167. Patients have been treated across nine different hospitals and medical facilities in the region. While 13 patients with stable health have been discharged, others remain under medical care. The Quang Ngai Department of Health noted that official test results for food and biological samples are still pending to determine the exact cause. The owners of Bánh mì Bà Được have issued a public apology, are cooperating with authorities, and have temporarily suspended all business operations while awaiting laboratory findings. By October 19, the number of hospitalizations rose to 175. Laboratory tests conducted by the Pasteur Institute of Nha Trang confirmed the presence of ‘Salmonella spp.’ in both food and patient samples. Specifically, 12 out of 13 food samples collected from the stall tested positive, including vegetables, pork sausage, meat floss, sauce, chili sauce, bread, and butter. Testing also revealed high levels of ‘E. coli’ and ‘Staphylococcus aureus’ in several samples, with one butter sample containing ‘E. coli’ levels as high as 18,000 CFU/g.
