Food safety and hygiene violations in Europe

Overview

Authorities in North Macedonia and the Czech Republic have identified significant food safety and hygiene violations through recent inspections.

In Radovish, North Macedonia, police arrested two men for the unauthorized production of contaminated ice. Following a search of four locations, officials seized 850 kilograms of ice and several machines. Laboratory tests confirmed that the finished product and equipment were contaminated with Escherichia coli and coliform bacteria. The suspects also allegedly used an illegal water connection to avoid metering and face criminal charges for distributing harmful food products.

In a broader regional context, inspections in Skopje, North Macedonia, led to the seizure of approximately two tons of unsafe food at the Chento green market due to unhygienic selling conditions. Simultaneously, the State Agricultural and Food Inspection in the Czech Republic reported that over half of the soft-serve ice cream samples tested during the summer failed to meet hygienic limits. Inspectors found excessive levels of Enterobacteriaceae bacteria, citing poor production hygiene and inadequate equipment sanitation.
