Food safety and storage risks

Overview

Initial reports highlighted risks associated with transferring dry pet food into smaller containers, noting that improper handling can lead to fat oxidation, moisture buildup, and contamination. Maintaining nutritional quality requires controlling exposure to heat, light, humidity, and air, as well as ensuring containers are cleaned to prevent mixing new food with old residues.

Subsequent concerns focused on the health risks of using plastic food containers improperly. Specifically, pouring hot or oily foods into plastics not designed for high temperatures can cause material migration into the food. Additionally, using non-microwave-safe plastic containers for reheating meals poses risks of unsafe chemical exposure.

Food safety experts have expanded these warnings to include the risks of using styrofoam and repurposing containers. In the Czech Republic, Lukáš Vápenka of the Institute of Food Preservation at VŠCHT Prague noted that using containers like ice cream tubs for hot meals can cause additives, such as stabilizers, to leach into food. This risk is heightened by fatty foods, which can cause certain plastics to swell and interact more intensely with the container surface.

In Vietnam, health warnings specifically caution against using polystyrene (PS) styrofoam containers for food exceeding 70°C due to risks of deformation and chemical leaching. Experts recommend using heat-resistant materials, such as glass, for storing or serving hot or oily foods to mitigate these risks.
