Food safety authorities in India have conducted various inspections targeting hygiene and handling violations. In Korba, Chhattisgarh, an investigation was launched into New Delhi Sweets after a viral video showed staff washing cooking utensils on a toilet floor. The establishment received an improvement notice and was ordered to rectify its washing arrangements to avoid license suspension. In Delhi, the government’s Food Safety Department conducted inspections across several areas, including Chandni Chowk and Okhla, ahead of the festive season. Officials identified issues such as pest activity, improper food storage, and employees handling food without gloves. Various food samples were collected for laboratory testing, following previous findings of expired products in e-commerce warehouses. Additionally, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) issued an advisory regarding the temperature-controlled storage of perishable items like paneer, meat, and fish to prevent spoilage. Further enforcement in Delhi revealed additional lapses in sweet manufacturing units, including missing FSSAI licenses, inadequate training, and improper labeling. Testing of desi ghee samples found that 19 were unsafe and four failed to meet safety standards. In a recent crackdown ahead of the festive season, the Delhi Food Safety Department seized over 322 kg of ghee from retail stores in areas such as Vikaspuri and Hastal village. Following surprise inspections, officials destroyed approximately 922 kg of adulterated or spoiled food items. This included 402 kg of products such as rasgullas, chhena, and milk cake from unlicensed manufacturing units in Nihal Vihar, and 520 kg of spoiled khoya and chhena at the Mori Gate Khoya Mandi. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta stated that the government “will not tolerate food adulteration that risks public health” and directed continued monitoring and surprise inspections. As the Diwali festival approaches, food safety departments across multiple states have intensified raids to prevent adulteration.
