Small-scale farmers in Romania face difficulties selling perishable produce due to high retail costs and storage risks. In response, the Local Food Bank Sector 6 initiated the ‘Culege Binele’ campaign, allowing farmers to donate unsold, safe-to-consume fruits and vegetables to vulnerable populations via a dedicated collection fleet. Data from the Federation of Food Banks in Romania (FBAR) shows the country wastes more than 3.45 million tons of food annually, even as over 27% of the population faces poverty or social exclusion risks. FBAR reports that Romanian households alone discard approximately 1.87 million tons of food annually, a significant financial burden caused by inefficient shopping, improper storage, and confusion over expiration dates. To mitigate this, legislation allows agro-food companies to donate surplus, items with aesthetic packaging defects, surplus or near-expiry stocks to food banks with tax deductibility and VAT exemptions. These items are processed through a national fleet of 31 trucks and distributed via nine regional warehouses to NGOs serving the elderly, children, and families in crisis. In 2025, food banks saved over 10,000 tons of processed food, providing 20 million meals to more than 326,000 vulnerable individuals. Meanwhile, the agricultural sector faces mounting pressure from rising production costs. In the second quarter of 2026, prices for agricultural inputs such as energy, fertilizers, and feed rose by 11.7% in Romania compared to the previous year, Romania, the second highest rise in the European Union. While EU-wide agricultural product prices decreased by 5.8% during this period, Romanian prices saw a slight increase of approximately 1%. Recent reports indicate shifting trends in specific sectors, such as viticulture, where a high-temperature summer led to a massive grape harvest of approximately four million hectoliters, though some regions like Iași reported production 15-20% lower than the previous year.
