In early August 2026 the Malta Football Association publicly backed FIFA President Gianni Infantino and UEFA chief Aleksander Ceferin, linking the endorsement to new infrastructure projects. The Argentine and Mexican federations also issued letters reaffirming support, praising Infantino’s ten‑year tenure and his apology for a withdrawn commercial‑rights proposal. At the same time a wave of European withdrawals emerged, with the Hellenic Football Federation joining Wales, England, Serbia and Finland in refusing to back Infantino’s bid for a fourth term. Infantino reiterated his apology and pledged a review ahead of the FIFA Congress scheduled for March 2027 in Morocco, while noting continued backing from the African Football Confederation. On 6 August, CAF’s executive committee issued a unanimous statement reaffirming its support for Infantino, endorsing the FIFA Forward Enterprise governance reforms and announcing an internal review to be presented to the FIFA Council. CAF praised the successful 2026 World Cup and highlighted preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. The following day, On 7 August, Argentina and Mexico again confirmed reiterated their support, backing, while Greece’s withdrawal was reiterated, underscoring UEFA announced it would boycott FIFA competitions, including the persistent World Cup, if Infantino is re‑elected. UEFA warned it could trigger a vote of no confidence, which would require at least 106 votes. The split between African and some CONMEBOL members on one side and several European associations on the other persists as the March 2027 election approaches.
