Foreign investment and trade in Pakistan

Overview

Foreign investment in Pakistan has shown significant long-term activity, with the Overseas Investors Chamber of Commerce and Industry (OICCI) reporting that foreign companies invested over $23 billion in the country over the last decade. This amount exceeds Pakistan’s cumulative net foreign direct investment (FDI) of approximately $21 billion during the same period. In fiscal 2025, OICCI member companies generated $47.2 billion in gross revenue and contributed $11.5 billion in taxes.

By July 2026, China emerged as the primary source of FDI for Pakistan, contributing $63.2 million, which accounted for roughly 35.4% of the country’s total net FDI of $178.6 million for that month. Investment was concentrated in the financial, insurance, electricity, and gas supply sectors. Additionally, trade relations between the two nations expanded through agricultural exports, as Pakistan’s rice exports to China grew by over 200% in value between January and July 2026 compared to the previous year.
