Foreign investment in Indonesian battery materials
Overview
International battery and material companies are increasing investments in Indonesia to secure nickel resources and expand production capabilities.
Australian firm Pure Battery Technologies announced a US$350 million investment to construct a precursor cathode active material plant in Central Java’s Batang special economic zone. Scheduled for construction in 2027, the facility aims to utilize Indonesian nickel to establish a full-value-chain for electric-vehicle batteries, including recycling capabilities.
Separately, South Korean company EcoPro BM is investing 765 billion won into the BNSI nickel smelter currently under construction in Sulawesi. The company intends to pivot toward nickel smelting to secure higher profit margins and reduce raw material costs, aiming for the smelting business to contribute significantly to its total operating income by 2030.
