Reports have emerged regarding the recruitment of foreign nationals into the Russian military to fight in Ukraine. An Equatorial Guinean student, Daniel Angel Masie Nchama, detailed how he was allegedly coerced into service after being promised military training for a bodyguard career. Nchama reported that recruits were forced to sign documents at gunpoint and had their passports confiscated. He described extreme conditions on the front lines in Donetsk. Ukrainian authorities estimate approximately 1,800 Africans have been recruited for Russian troops, with investigative groups noting hundreds of fatalities among these recruits. In Cameroon, individuals are reportedly lured by false promises of employment in construction or security. In Indonesia, the government is investigating reports from the Ukrainian Foreign Intelligence Service (FISU) alleging that at least eight Indonesian citizens have been recruited by Russia. These individuals were reportedly enticed by promises of high salaries, social benefits, and expedited Russian citizenship. The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs is conducting a comprehensive verification process, while the Indonesian Ambassador to Russia and Belarus, Jose Antonio Morato Tavares, has issued warnings regarding fraudulent mercenary recruitment schemes facilitated via social media. India has also responded to reports of its citizens being recruited. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has issued multiple advisories describing joining the Russian armed forces as a ‘dangerous path’ fraught with ‘mortal dangers’ and ‘grave danger to life’.
