Forest arson arrests in Italy

Overview

Authorities in Italy have arrested individuals suspected of intentional forest arson in different regions.

In Gargano National Park, a 35-year-old Civil Protection volunteer and sanitation worker was arrested for allegedly starting eight fires between July and August. The fires damaged Mediterranean scrub, pine forests, and olive groves in the Vieste and Peschici areas. Investigators used technical surveys and video surveillance to document the suspect setting fires and fleeing in a vehicle. The suspect faces charges of forest arson, with the Gargano National Park intending to join legal proceedings as a civil party.

In Calabria, an individual was arrested in the Ergadi area of Curinga after being captured on film by a regional drone. The drone surveillance, monitored in real-time by a regional Control Room and Carabinieri Forestali, allowed authorities to intercept the suspect while he was igniting multiple points. The fire affected approximately 1.5 hectares of land. The arrest was part of the ‘Tolleranza Zero’ project and the 2026 Forest Fire Prevention campaign.
