Recent Formula 1 Grands Prix have seen significant starting lineup shifts due to engine component penalties. At the Bahrain Grand Prix, multiple drivers faced penalties that reshuffled the grid. Franco Colapinto received a 15-position penalty following a combination of a previous incident in Baku and a new penalty for using a fifth Mercedes V6 engine. Isack Hadjar dropped five positions due to an internal combustion engine change, while Arvid Lindblad faced a 30-position penalty, placing him at the back of the grid. Max Verstappen secured pole position despite these changes. At the United States Grand Prix, Gabriel Bortoleto faced significant setbacks. Following a previous penalty exceeding 20 positions, Bortoleto received a record-breaking 80-place grid penalty during the 2026 event at the Circuit of the Americas. The Audi driver’s sanction was applied in two stages: an initial 20-place penalty for exceeding limits on the energy store and control electronics, followed by a 60-place penalty after replacing the internal combustion engine, turbocharger, exhaust system, MGU-K, and power unit ancillary components. Despite qualifying 13th, the cumulative penalty forced Bortoleto to start 22nd. He expressed optimism regarding a recovery drive, noting that the Austin circuit offers “significant overtaking opportunities.” During the race, Bortoleto managed to climb eight positions to finish in 13th place. He noted that while the new engine's performance was encouraging, the effort to fight through the field caused “significant tire degradation,” which limited his ability to score points. Meanwhile, his teammate Nico Hülkenberg started 11th following other grid adjustments.
