France wildfire response and climate adaptation
Entities: Monique Barbut · Emmanuel Macron · Sainte‑Maxime · French Ministry of Ecological Transition · Sébastien Lecornu
Overview
In mid‑July 2026 French officials toured fire‑rescue facilities in Montceau‑les‑Mines as agricultural wildfires surged. Ministerial delegate René Priet and local deputies highlighted the unprecedented scale and the cooperation of firefighters, volunteers and farmers.
A week later Deputy Philippe Brun labelled the crisis an “absolute horror” and pressed for urgent funding to expand personnel, equipment and preventive measures, signalling growing political pressure on civil‑protection budgets.
On 27 July Brun was joined by deputy Hadryen Klue, who escalated the criticism by calling the government negligent. Klue demanded an emergency session of the National Assembly to approve extra resources, proposed equipping A400M transport aircraft with water‑tank systems, and suggested using wealth‑tax revenue to purchase two Canadair planes. He also denounced the postponement of Super Puma helicopters. Both deputies urged swift action to address more than 13,500 fire incidents that had already burned over 116,000 hectares.
At the end of July Environment Minister Monique Barbut monitored crisis meetings in Sainte‑Maxime. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu tasked her with drafting concrete proposals to accelerate the third National Adaptation Plan to Climate Change, which must be presented by early October. The plan expands focus from immediate firefighting coordination to long‑term climate‑adaptation measures across building management, agriculture, transport, water, education and heat‑wave response, aiming to strengthen France’s overall wildfire preparedness.
