France cadmium regulation and exposure monitoring

Overview

The French government has introduced new regulations to accelerate the reduction of cadmium levels in phosphate fertilizers. To mitigate the risks of this carcinogen, which can accumulate in soil and enter the food chain through crops like cereals and pasta, the government aims to lower the authorized threshold from 90 mg/kg to 20 mg/kg of phosphorus by 2030. This represents an acceleration of previous timelines, with an interim limit of 60 mg/kg set for January 1, 2027.

Alongside these regulatory shifts, a national early detection campaign for cadmium exposure has faced implementation challenges. Although health insurance began covering urine tests in June, participation has remained low, with only 2,160 people tested. Obstacles to the screening program include the necessity of medical prescriptions, skepticism from physicians regarding the predictive value of tests, and difficulties in pinpointing specific geographic areas with recognized soil contamination.
