France Catholic church vandalism
Overview
In early July 2026, Catholic churches in Mulhouse and Lille were vandalised, adding to a series of attacks on French places of worship. A month later, three churches in the Tours archdiocese were broken into, sacrament houses looted, liturgical vessels destroyed and the Holy Sacrament profaned. Local officials condemned the incidents and announced compensatory Masses. The Tours attacks were described as part of a continuing pattern that began with four churches desecrated in November 2024, which the archbishop warned reflected growing hostility toward the Church.
In early August 2026, the Archdiocese of Tours reported further desecrations at three additional churches – in Chambray‑lès‑Tours, Luynes and the St. Joan of Arc Church in Tours. The vandals forced open doors, looted offering boxes, damaged vessels, broke a tabernacle and profaned the Blessed Sacrament. Mayor Michel Lamy condemned the acts as "unacceptable" and expressed solidarity with the parish communities. Masses of reparation are scheduled, marking the seventh desecration in the archdiocese within two years.
