France M51.3 ballistic missile test

Overview

On October 6, 2026, France successfully conducted the first test launch of its upgraded M51.3 strategic ballistic missile from the nuclear-powered submarine Le Vigilant. Designated Operation SMERTRIOS, the launch took place off the coast of Brittany near Finistère.

The missile was launched without a nuclear warhead to serve as an acceptance test and to certify the submarine’s operational readiness following an extensive maintenance and modernization period. The projectile, which was tracked by the Directorate General of Armaments (DGA), traveled approximately 4,700 km and landed in the North Atlantic, hundreds of kilometers from any coastline.

President Emmanuel Macron observed the launch from the multi-mission frigate Auvergne. He characterized the technical success as a reinforcement of the credibility and long-term viability of France’s strategic deterrence, describing the test as a “very important” moment that both allies and adversaries are closely monitoring. He stated, “To be free, you have to inspire fear. And to inspire fear, you have to be powerful.”

The M51.3, produced by ArianeGroup, is the third iteration of the M51 missile family and features improved range, precision, and anti-missile penetration capabilities. While official range figures remain undisclosed, estimates from the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists suggest the M51.3 range exceeds 9,500 kilometers, an increase from the previous version's 9,000-kilometer range. The missile is designed for high-speed reentry, reaching speeds of approximately Mach 20.

While the French Ministry of Armed Forces emphasized compliance with international obligations, the Kremlin criticized the test, stating that Europe is building its security identity on confrontation with Russia. This demonstration is part of a broader modernization of France's strategic arsenal, which includes future third-generation submarines and a new program for hypersonic strategic missiles.
