In late July 2026, climate models projected a hot and dry summer for France, with temperatures expected to be 1°C to 2°C above normal and precipitation levels well below average. By late August, the weather pattern shifted toward atmospheric instability. Due to the positioning of Atlantic depressions and a high-pressure system over Central Europe, the country moved from drought conditions toward warm, humid, and tropical-feeling weather. This transition brought significant storm activity, including heavy rain, hail, and the risk of violent thunderstorms, particularly in the south and east. On August 20, severe weather warnings were issued for several French regions, including risks of violent thunderstorms, hail, and potential tornadoes. In the departments of Gers and Lot-et-Garonne, meteorologists warned of intense rainfall and powerful gusts of up to 120 km/h. By August 22, Météo-France issued orange alerts for numerous departments as meteorological instability intensified. In the Southwest, including Haute-Garonne, Gers, and Lot-et-Garonne, violent storms are expected to bring wind gusts between 90 and 120 km/h, hail, and intense electrical activity, raising risks of property damage, flash flooding, and forest fires. In the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region, experts warn of torrential downpours that could “mimic monsoon conditions,” with rainfall potentially reaching 50 to 70 mm per hour. On August 24, the scale of the instability expanded, with 16 departments placed on orange alert for severe thunderstorms. This includes extensive areas in Occitanie—such as Tarn, Aveyron, and Dordogne—as well as parts of central France and the Mediterranean. Early storm activity in the Landes department has already left approximately 7,500 households without electricity. Meanwhile, Corsica remains under a yellow alert for thunderstorms, with the possibility of an upgrade to orange.
