The Louvre has launched its major monographic retrospective of the Spanish Golden Age painter Francisco de Zurbarán. The exhibition, which opened on 7 October 2026 and is scheduled to run until 25 January 2027, was organized in collaboration with the National Gallery in London and the Art Institute of Chicago. The showcase features approximately 60 to 65 works, including early religious pieces from Seville, still lifes, and mythological works commissioned for King Philip IV’s Buen Retiro Palace. Notable items on display include the monumental ‘Christ on the Cross,’ painted by the artist at age 19 for a Dominican convent in Seville, and ‘Saint Serapion,’ which is highlighted for its dramatic use of light and shadow. As the exhibition progresses, it has been integrated into a broader three-month program in Paris dedicated to Spanish culture, featuring various cinematic, theatrical, and musical offerings. A key feature of the display is a curated dialogue between Zurbarán’s paintings and ‘Sculpting Color,’ a parallel exhibition of 25 17th-century Spanish religious wood sculptures on loan from the National Museum of Sculpture in Valladolid. This pairing is intended to emphasize the sculptural and theatrical qualities of the painter’s religious compositions and his mastery of chiaroscuro. This exhibition aims to broaden the artist's reputation beyond his austere religious figures by showcasing his versatility and his success as an entrepreneur who exported works to the Americas. It marks the first large-scale international presentation of Zurbarán’s work since the late 1980s.
