Former AC Milan captain Franco Baresi died on 31 July 2026 at age 66 following a battle with lung cancer. His health had declined after undergoing surgery to remove a lung nodule in August 2025. Baresi, who spent his entire 20-year career at Milan and captained the side for 15 seasons, was a member of Italy’s 1982 World Cup-winning squad. His last public appearance was carrying the torch at the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics. His funeral on 4 August at Milan’s Basilica di Sant’Ambrogio drew thousands of fans and legends, including Paolo Maldini and Marco van Basten. Tributes included chants of “C’è solo un capitano” and a moment of silence. While club officials Gerry Cardinale and Paolo Scaroni attended, the absence of captain Mike Maignan drew criticism. Because the first team was on a pre-season tour in Australia, the club placed a wreath before a mural in Perth. On 4 August, Milan played Inter in a 1-1 friendly at Optus Stadium in Perth, where players wore black armbands and observed a minute of silence. Following the tour, the club appointed Robin Amorim as head coach, who pledged to uphold Baresi’s legacy. To honor the legend, AC Milan announced that all club teams will wear a commemorative patch on their left sleeves throughout the 2026-2027 season. The patch features the slogan ‘6 per sempre’ (6 forever), using typography digitized from fans’ handwritten messages in the club’s condolence book. The patch is placed on the left sleeve, the same arm Baresi used to wear his captain's armband. The tribute debuts on 22 August with the women’s team against Como Women, followed by the men’s team against Torino on 23 August. The patch will also be worn by the Milan Futuro and Primavera squads.
