Fraud and scam activity in Hong Kong and Singapore
Overview
Authorities in Hong Kong and Singapore have reported various fraudulent schemes targeting residents. In Hong Kong, police arrested a 24-year-old man suspected of operating a criminal call center that made over 23,000 automated calls in a single week. The suspect allegedly impersonated customer service agents for online shopping platforms to solicit deposits or processing fees, with one victim losing over 100,000 Hong Kong dollars.
In a separate incident in Hong Kong, a 43-year-old woman and a 77-year-old man were arrested for street scams that defrauded victims of approximately HK$900,000. One method involved a scammer claiming to be locked out of a home to solicit cash and personal identification details.
Simultaneously, the Singapore Police Force reported at least 128 cases of social media impersonation scams since September, involving the theft of WhatsApp identities to solicit loans. These activities have led to losses of at least S$249,000 in Singapore. Both regional police forces have issued advisories urging public vigilance and the verification of financial requests through official channels.
