Law enforcement agencies in British Columbia have issued warnings regarding various fraudulent schemes. In Nanaimo and the North Cowichan/Duncan areas, the RCMP identified a specific scam targeting individuals who recently purchased new cellphones through legitimate carrier promotions. In this scheme, scammers pose as service providers and claim the wrong device was shipped. They instruct victims to return the phone using a prepaid shipping label provided via email. Once shipped, the devices are delivered to unauthorized private addresses rather than the carrier. Authorities noted that scammers can be convincing because they appear to possess specific details regarding recent purchases and deliveries. Constable Tessa McDonald of the North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP advised consumers to verify return requests directly with their service provider using a verified phone number. Expanding on these tactics, the West Shore RCMP reported a multi-step ‘bait and switch’ scam involving offers for free mobile phones. In these instances, fraudsters pose as telecommunications staff to inform individuals they are eligible for a free device. After the victim receives the phone, scammers claim the wrong device was sent and provide a prepaid label to return the item to a PO Box located outside of British Columbia. This process can result in the loss of the device and the potential compromise of sensitive personal or financial information. The RCMP warns against providing Social Insurance Numbers, passwords, or credit card details to unsolicited callers. Additionally, the RCMP in Kelowna reported a surge in distraction thefts and fake gold scams, where suspects use deception or emotional manipulation to steal jewelry or offer counterfeit items as collateral.
