Fraud and theft investigations in Romania and UK
Overview
Criminal activities involving fraud and theft have been reported in both the United Kingdom and Romania.
In the United Kingdom, three Romanian nationals were sentenced to over 13 years in prison at Liverpool Crown Court for their roles in an organized crime group. Between October 2024 and August 2026, the group targeted vulnerable pensioners across regions including Nottinghamshire, Staffordshire, Kent, and Manchester, stealing more than £40,000 through unauthorized banking transactions.
In Romania, separate investigations have led to the detention of two men. In Rovinari, a 22-year-old was detained for multiple thefts from local stores occurring between January 2024 and October 2026. In Sibiu, a 29-year-old is under investigation for theft and computer forgery after allegedly stealing from a 67-year-old woman and using her personal data to conduct fraudulent transactions on online betting platforms.
