Fraunhofer plastic fatigue database launch

Overview

In July 2026 the Fraunhofer Institute for Operational Safety and System Reliability (LBF) released a large fatigue‑strength database for thermoplastic polymers, encompassing data from more than 11,000 specimens and around 1,300 S‑N curves. The repository links material type, processing, geometry, temperature and load conditions, and is used to develop a Wöhler‑line generator that can predict fatigue behaviour early in the design phase. The tool is intended to aid manufacturers in assessing notch effects, temperature exposure and ageing, shortening development cycles and supporting repair, second‑life and lightweight‑construction concepts.

A week later, at the Fakuma 2026 trade fair, Fraunhofer ICT demonstrated biobased polymer components and a Duroplast injection technique for electric‑motor thermal management, while LBF again highlighted the fatigue database and its validation on a dishwasher door mechanism. The combined announcements underscored Fraunhofer’s push toward digital durability modelling and sustainable polymer applications.
