As the 2027 French presidential election approaches, various political and social movements are defining their platforms and priorities. In the pre-campaign phase, issues concerning Islam and relations with Algeria have emerged as central themes. Hard-right and far-right figures, including Marine Le Pen and Jordan Bardella of the Rassemblement National, have proposed sanctions on the Islamic veil in public and the revocation of the 1968 Franco-Algerian immigration agreement. Édouard Philippe has also adopted more hardline rhetoric regarding Algiers. Legal experts have noted that the 1968 agreement is largely symbolic and its removal might not significantly impact Algerian nationals, who would then fall under standard European law. Other political groups are focusing on different sectors. ESS France has called for the social and solidarity economy to be centered in upcoming debates, emphasizing funding and education. Meanwhile, the Écologistes Manche movement has prioritized climate change, renewable energy, and opposition to the ‘Aval du Futur’ nuclear project. Within the French Senate, leadership changes have occurred in the green political sphere. Mélanie Vogel, a member of Les Écologistes since 2010, has been elected president of the Ecologist, Solidarity and Territories group, succeeding Guillaume Gontard. Following recent senatorial elections, the group also addressed membership, declining to welcome Gabriel Amard of La France insoumise due to a “lack of necessary consensus,” while accepting Marc Péré, a mayor who received support from both LFI and Les Écologistes.
