The French banking sector has faced rising costs and security challenges. In 2025, bank fraud in France reached approximately 1.24 billion euros, marking a 3.8% increase in total losses despite a 7.6% decrease in the total number of fraudulent operations. This rise was largely driven by manipulation scams, which surged by 34% to 516 million euros. These scams, often involving criminals impersonating bank advisors to trick victims into validating fraudulent transactions, now account for more than 40% of all payment fraud. Experts suggest that recent data leaks have increased the effectiveness of these attacks by providing fraudsters with personal details to make phishing messages appear more credible. The Observatoire de la sécurité des moyens de paiement (OSMP) noted that no demographic is exempt, affecting young people, the elderly, and high-income professionals. Other significant drivers of loss include online bank transfers, which represent 37% of fraudulent amounts, and remote card payments, which account for approximately 29.5% of total fraud. While remote card fraud remains high due to internet purchases, the fraud rate for these transactions is reportedly decreasing due to strengthened security measures and strong authentication. Parallel to these security concerns, banking fees in France increased by an average of 2.7% between April 2025 and April 2026. Data from the Banque de France indicated that among 102 studied institutions, only 10 offered free account maintenance fees.
