French civil unrest and security investigations
Overview
Following outbreaks of violence and looting during protests against the cost of living, French authorities have launched multiple investigations into the drivers of the unrest.
Intelligence services identified approximately 5,000 militants categorized as ‘ultra-left’ who were reportedly at the forefront of violent disturbances. While officials such as Sébastien Lecornu pointed toward a ‘nebula of the extreme left,’ Paris public prosecutor Laure Beccuau noted that it could not yet be confirmed if the perpetrators in Paris were specifically individuals politicized toward the ultra-left. Security incidents linked to these disturbances include the arson of town halls in Limoges and Poitiers, as well as sabotage of SNCF rail traffic near Toulouse.
Parallel to the investigation into domestic political involvement, French intelligence is examining potential foreign influence operations. Investigators are looking into whether Russia, Iran, China, and Algeria have used state media, digital networks, and influencers to exploit the unrest to ‘amplify violence and discredit French institutions.’ Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot denounced the exploitation of student mobilizations through hostile narratives, as digital operations were identified as attempting to intensify public indignation.
