French military CASSIOPÉE satellite program
Overview
The French Directorate General of Armaments (DGA) has awarded the CASSIOPÉE contract to Airbus Defence and Space and Unseenlabs. This project, part of the broader CELESTE program, is designed to develop new military satellites for space-based electromagnetic intelligence.
Scheduled for completion by 2032, the program aims to replace the existing CERES constellation to maintain France’s signals intelligence (SIGINT) capabilities. The new system will focus on collecting and analyzing electromagnetic signals, such as radar and telecommunications emissions, to monitor threats in strategic zones. The initiative is intended to enhance technical performance, responsiveness, and French national sovereignty and strategic autonomy.
Airbus will act as the prime contractor and system integrator, providing the control center, the space segment, and a satellite solution based on its S250 platform. Unseenlabs will serve as a co-contractor, contributing expertise in signal detection, geolocation, and onboard processing.
