French mobile network outages
Overview
On October 21, 2026, a major technical incident caused widespread mobile network disruptions across France. Initial reports focused on a nationwide outage affecting Orange and its subsidiary Sosh, impacting calls, SMS, and mobile internet services in major cities such as Paris, Lyon, Marseille, and Toulouse. The disruption was attributed to a failure in the mobile core network, specifically stemming from a failed migration of subscribers to a new 5G core network.
Subsequent reports indicated the outage was more extensive, affecting millions of subscribers across multiple major operators, including SFR and Bouygues Telecom. While the service interruptions lasted from approximately 11:30 to 21:00, preliminary findings suggested the cause was a technical malfunction rather than a cyberattack.
In the aftermath, Orange issued an apology and announced it would double the data allowance for affected subscribers, though some customers sought refunds through customer service. Technical teams remained mobilized to monitor network stability following the restoration of services.
