French pastoralism transhumance initiatives

Overview

In July 2026 France advanced its International Year of Pastoralism by staging a series of mountain‑region events. The Parc naturel régional des Volcans d'Auvergne led a 5.5‑km transhumance of 250 Rava sheep across volcanic terrain, while the Belledonne massif hosted workshops, shepherd‑led tours and fire‑prevention activities to highlight the ecological role of grazing.

Later that month, the effort expanded to the wine sector. A partnership between Gironde vineyards and Pyrenean sheep farmers increased the number of grazing sheep to about 400 across eight châteaux. The scheme, coordinated by the Civam association, seeks to replace tractor work with livestock grazing, delivering environmental benefits, cost sharing and a model for sustainable agriculture.

Both initiatives aim to preserve open alpine and vineyard landscapes, reduce wildfire risk and promote biodiversity while supporting traditional shepherding practices.
