As the demonstrations expanded to include Paris, Montpellier, and Metz, critics—including Amnesty International France and various judicial unions—argued the law effectively shifts the burden of proof from officers to victims or their families. They warned this could create a “culture of impunity.” Recent reports indicate that thousands of demonstrators have taken to the streets in major cities including Marseille, Lyon, and Lille. Opposition has intensified following a petition against the measure that garnered approximately 730,000 signatures, despite its prior dismissal by the National Assembly's law committee. Mathilde Panot of La France Insoumise has urged the Senate to reject the text, citing concerns over the equality of citizens before the law. Having been adopted in a first reading by the National Assembly on July 7, the bill is now set to be examined by the Senate.
