French public middle school sports program expansion

Overview

France is expanding its physical activity programs for public middle school students. Beginning in the 2026 school year, a program providing two additional hours of weekly sports will be made available to all voluntary public middle schools. This initiative expands upon a previous model that primarily reserved such opportunities for schools within priority education networks (REP/REP+).

The additional sports hours are intended to occur outside of mandatory instruction periods, utilizing the extended school day between 08:00 and 18:00. Participation is free for students and is funded by the Ministry of Sports, Youth and Community Life.
