The Union of Federations of Civil Servants and Associates (UFFA-CFDT) issued a strike notice for November 5, 2026, targeting State, Territorial, and Hospital functions. The mobilization seeks general salary increases, career revaluation, and increased resources to address climate and demographic challenges. Following a meeting with Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu at Matignon, labor unions announced the strike after negotiations failed to produce results. Sophie Binet, leader of the Confédération Générale des Travailleurs (CGT), stated that none of the unions’ demands were addressed during the session. Following large-scale demonstrations on October 17 and October 24, social unrest has intensified. The October 24 protests saw participation estimates ranging from 410,000 to 800,000 people, with the CGT reporting 800,000 participants while government figures placed the number at 410,000. These protests resulted in 1,314 to 1,435 arrests and over 500 injuries among protesters and law enforcement. While 70,000 security forces were deployed to prevent widespread looting, clashes and vandalism were reported in cities including Lyon, Nice, and Toulouse. In response to grievances regarding low wages and the rising cost of living, President Emmanuel Macron has promised the government will present “very concrete” measures to address student demands, specifically regarding the Parcoursup university admissions platform. Additionally, the government is considering an early increase of the minimum wage (SMIC) before January 1st, though Medef president Patrick Martin has warned this could create instability for businesses. New waves of mobilization are being organized, including ‘casserolades’ (pot-banging protests) in front of the National Assembly on October 30 and mass rallies on October 31. Notably, all major unions representing private education under contract have joined the call for action, potentially affecting over 2 million students. The movement is characterized by an unprecedented alliance of five major central organizations, including the CFDT, CGT, FO, Unsa, and FSU.
