The 2026 French literary season, or ‘rentrée littéraire’, is characterized by a contraction in total releases, with 461 novels slated for August through October. This is a decrease from the 484 titles released the previous year. While French-language titles remain stable at 344, translated works have declined to 117 due to rising rights and translation costs. This shift suggests publishers are increasingly opting for established French authors to mitigate risks in a strained market. New data from the Centre national du Livre (CNL) highlights a broader decline in reading habits across France. The 6th CNL barometer indicates that the percentage of citizens identifying as readers is decreasing across all categories, with daily reading reaching its lowest level in a decade. The proportion of people reading at least five books a year has dropped to 63%. The decline is particularly pronounced among youth; according to the study ‘Les jeunes Français et la lecture’, young people spend an average of 3 hours and 1 minute per day in front of screens, compared to just 18 minutes reading books. Régine Hatchondo, president of the CNL, has emphasized the importance of preserving reading as an essential time for oneself. As the season progresses, the industry faces significant economic headwinds. NielsenIQ GfK reported that book sales volumes fell by 6.2% during the first half of the year. Independent bookstores remain vulnerable, reporting revenue drops of 3.7% in July and 5% in August. Amidst these challenges, the season features notable milestones, such as author Antoine Volodine’s retirement announcement and his release of eleven simultaneous books under the pseudonym Infernus Iohannes. Concerns also persist regarding the visibility of translators in media coverage, despite legal protections under the French Intellectual Property Code. Despite the lower volume of publications, competition for prestigious literary awards is intensifying.
