In August 2026, Frosinone Mayor Riccardo Mastrangeli announced that the municipality would freeze local tax rates for 2026 and had successfully exited a state-mandated financial recovery plan. Mastrangeli described the move as a “road of stability and fiscal rigor” that restored solidity to the city’s accounts. Later in the month, authorities launched an investigation into a digital disinformation campaign targeting the mayor. The campaign involved a fabricated A false report claiming circulated on the Facebook page ‘Popolo Antifascista’ claimed Mastrangeli had been arrested on unfounded charges and that €500,000 in illicit funds related to illegal immigration. Italian police, including migrant exploitation had been found in his home. Following a formal complaint filed by Mastrangeli, the DIGOS Digos division of the Frosinone Police and specialists from the Postal and Communications Police, Police Cyber Security Section began an investigation. Law enforcement is working to identify the original creators of the fabricated content, which used altered graphic logos to deceive readers, as well as those who knowingly amplified the post through social networks and messaging platforms.
