Fujifilm magnetic tape production expansion

Overview

Fujifilm Holdings has announced plans to increase its magnetic tape shipment capacity fivefold by fiscal 2028, relative to fiscal 2025 levels. The company will invest approximately 10 billion yen into its Odawara site at the Kanagawa Factory in Japan between fiscal 2026 and fiscal 2028.

This investment, described as the company’s largest in dedicated LTO tape facilities in roughly 20 years, aims to meet rising demand for data archiving driven by generative AI and cloud services. The expansion will focus on the latest LTO Ultrium 10 technology.

While magnetic tape has slower access speeds than SSDs or hard drives, it serves as a cost-effective solution for long-term archiving and disaster recovery. The technology also provides security through an “air gap,” where physical tape can be removed from networks to protect backups from ransomware and cyberattacks. Fujifilm is also reportedly collaborating with IBM on technologies to potentially increase future tape capacities up to 580TB.
