Funchal residential building fire and subsequent blaze
An intense fire broke out on Rua da Boa Viagem in Funchal, producing high flames and a dense column of smoke near several buildings. Emergency services, including the Bombeiros Sapadores do Funchal, led the initial response to combat the blaze, which posed a significant risk to surrounding structures. Following the fire, which occurred late on a Friday night in a three-story residential building, inspections determined that the structure's integrity was compromised. The upper sections were heavily carbonized and windows were destroyed, leading to a decision to perform a controlled demolition of a portion of the building tower in the Zona Velha district. The incident resulted in minor injuries to a resident and a firefighter, both of whom were treated at Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça. Additionally, eight people were relocated due to the fire and smoke impact on neighboring buildings. A new fire broke out on the morning of September 29 in a building adjacent to the previously damaged structure on Rua da Boa Viagem, near the Mercado dos Lavradores. This second incident prompted a significant mobilization of 25 personnel and nine vehicles from the Funchal Sapadores, Madeira Volunteers, and Santa Cruz firefighters. The blaze caused traffic disruptions, including partial closures of Rua D. Carlos I and Rua Latino Coelho. The Judicial Police (Polícia Judiciária) have been called to investigate the circumstances. Authorities are considering whether remaining combustible materials from the previous fire caused the spread or if the fire had an unknown cause. While the building was reported to be unoccupied at the time of the alert, its recent habitation status remains unconfirmed. Operations have since moved into a cooling phase to monitor wooden structures.
